Review

Sworn off men Allie goes to New Orleans to work for her father in the hotel business before starting college.  Moments after arriving at the hotel however she catches the eye of an smoldering sexy guy and is shortly introduced into a paranormal society of Pteron’s crow like shapeshifters who can fly and are like the royalty of the supernatural world.  Allie wanted an adventure before starting college and boy did she get one!

Allie was a difficult main character to enjoy.  She was quite bitchy and standoffish throughout the beginning of the book especially to any guys who tried to pick her up.  Seriously if you had sworn off men why on earth would you hang around with a party animal friend and go out to clubs.  Or if you did want to hit the clubs why bother dressing up in a manner that would garner attention, you can’t have it both ways in my opinion.  As much as I felt that Levi and his persistance in hooking up with her was out of line, I really felt that she handled him poorly and to be honest I don’t think many guys would have bothered with her considering she came across as a bit of a stuck up know it all. She did melt a bit as the story progresses but still I can’t say that she would be someone that I would choose to hang out with, way to uncomfortable in her own skin – prickly on the outside and insecure on the inside.

Levi started out in this story as a cliched player whose ego was well and truly overinflated.  He seriously had some completely bad pick up lines and was pretty much an asshole. I thought he was growing on me as the book progressed but then he did something towards the end of the novel that was well and truly not on! Yep Levi was a big dissapointment personality wise.

While I didn’t particulary enjoy either of the main characters they really did have some great chemistry and the relationship was quite steamy.  It did seem to move a little suddenly from Allie wanting nothing to do with him to him sharing his big life secret to her which puzzled me a bit but these two did work as a couple. I really enjoyed the secondary character of Hailey, Allie’s New Orleans besty she was by far my favourite character in this book – really fun and a good source of information on the Pteron’s and Levi.

This is a very light paranormal book with quite a large portion of the novel spent more on contemporary issues such as relationships, college, parent issues.  Quite a bit of it covers the New Orleans party scene which I found quite enjoyable and interesting.  I loved hearing about the cuisine the live music and the city in general. I’ll be interested to find out more about the Pteron’s and their link with the city in the future installments.

While I had some issues with the characters in this book I did find it a fast fun read and perfect for the summer days we’re experiencing here in Australia. I’ll be interested to see how things develop in the sequel!
