In My Mailbox #3

In My Mailbox, hosted by The Story Siren is a weekly post that allows book bloggers to share their excitement over new books they have received each week.

I’ve had a crazy busy week getting my daughter ready to start childcare for the first time (eeek!) so I haven’t had much time to read, surf Netgalley or buy books… this is probably a good thing!  I still did pick up a couple of things which i’m sharing below:

Part of my birthday present this year was a $150 Amazon gift voucher so that I could buy some Kindle books guilt free.  I thought about splurging it all on pre-orders and things off my wishlist but decided that wouldn’t be as much fun as using it up slowly by purchasing something every week or so.   These are my first birthday present choices!

Surrender by Lee Nichols | Amazon | The Book Depository

I’m so excited to read the last of this trilogy!  This was such a great series even if the book covers are pretty blah :)

Goodreads Synopsis:

After a devastating battle at headquarters in New York, the ghostkeeping world is in shambles. When Emma and Bennett return home, they are determined to defeat the wraithmaster, Neos, forever. But it’s not going to be easy. Bennett’s parents kick him out when they realize he is still using drugs to enhance his powers. Emma is convinced her aunt has come back from the dead to warn her of a new threat. And worst of all, Neos is using wraiths to possess the students at Thatcher Academy. If the ghosts manage to take over the entire school, even Emma won’t be strong enough to stop them. But if either she or Bennett sacrifice his or her powers, they might be able to save the ghostkeeping world once and for all-and break the “ghostkeepers lose their powers when they fall in love” curse. The question is: who will be the one to surrender all power?

Fast-paced and romantic, this conclusion to the Haunting Emma trilogy will thrill readers as it brings the ghostly mystery to a close.

Clarity by Kim Harrington | Amazon | The Book Depository

This book has been on my to-read this for ages and I finally decided it was time to buy it.  I love a good murder mystery!

Goodreads Synopsis:

Clarity “Clare” Fern sees things. Things no one else can see. Things like stolen kisses and long-buried secrets. All she has to do is touch a certain object, and the visions come to her. It’s a gift.

And a curse.

When a teenage girl is found murdered, Clare’s ex-boyfriend wants her to help solve the case—but Clare is still furious at the cheating jerk. Then Clare’s brother—who has supernatural gifts of his own—becomes the prime suspect, and Clare can no longer look away. Teaming up with Gabriel, the smoldering son of the new detective, Clare must venture into the depths of fear, revenge, and lust in order to track the killer. But will her sight fail her just when she needs it most?

For Review

I signed up for Edelweiss this week and put in some requests but sadly haven’t heard anything back.  I’m not too sure if publishers don’t check this system as regularly or if I’ve done something hopelessly wrong (very likely I’m getting pretty fail with technology as I get older).  In anycase I hope to get some response on them in the next week or so before I put in any further requests anything else as I don’t want my review list to get out of hand!  Anyone familiar with Edelweiss is welcome to give me some ideas of their experiences with the system and how long responses generally take!

Ashen Winter by Mike Mullin | Amazon | The Book Depository

I loved the cover and thought the synopsis sounded very intriguing. This is the 2nd book in the series so I must remember to purchase book 1 for the Kindle sometime next week so I can get started on it!

Goodreads Synopsis:

It’s been over six months since the eruption of the Yellowstone supervolcano. Alex and Darla have been staying with Alex’s relatives, trying to cope with the new reality of the primitive world so vividly portrayed in Ashfall, the first book in this series. It’s also been six months of waiting for Alex’s parents to return from Iowa. Alex and Darla decide they can wait no longer and must retrace their journey into Iowa to find and bring back Alex’s parents to the tenuous safety of Illinois. But the landscape they cross is even more perilous than before, with life-and-death battles for food and power between the remaining communities. When the unthinkable happens, Alex must find new reserves of strength and determination to survive.

What books have you scored in the last week?  Link me your IMM or let me know in the comments!

Kathe (Good Lit and Green Tea) says:

I’ve read one of Lee Nichols’ adult books, Hand-Me-Down, and I loved it! There was something about her writing and the protagonist that I couldn’t help liking; she was a quirky girl, I suppose, and I liked that. While I haven’t read the Haunting Emma trilogy yet, it looks nice. (Or, well, you’re right… The cover doesn’t look great, but the synopsis is interesting!)

I’ve put Clarity on my to-read list, though. I’ve always been interested in psychometry, so a book with a character gifted with it… I like! I hope you’ll enjoy it, and Ashen Winter, too!

Thanks for stopping by my IMM :) I didn’t realise Lee Nichols did adult books as well – I will have to check them out!

Clarity does look really good I can’t wait to read it.

Jac @ For Love and Books says:

You have a lot more self control than I do!! I could NEVER wait and slowly purchase it. If I get book giftcards, they are gone the day I get them. *lol*

Clarity sounds really, REALLY good! I haven’t read a good murder mystery in a long time -maybe I’ll look for it when I hit the store today!

Come see what I got In My Mailbox this week!

Hahaha – I am pretty amazed at my self control, I think it’s because I have quite a few egalleys atm to get through so the idea of too many other books leaves me a bit overwhelmed!

Thanks for stopping by my IMM :)

I may be one of the few readers who still hasn’t read Clarity. But believe me, it’s already on my TBR list and I’m dying to find an excuse to buy it!

I read Ashfall (last year, I think?) but, unfortunately, it was too post-apocaliptic for my taste. I don’t think I’ll be reading the second, Ashen Winter, but if you do I’ll be waiting to hear what you thought about it :)

Have an amazing week <3

I love a good post-apocalyptic YA novel so hopefully I’ll really enjoy Ashfall and Ashen Winter :) Thanks for stopping by my blog!

Alison (AlisonCanRead) says:

Great set! Ashen Winter has a creepy cover. It sounds interesting.

I quite liked the Ashen Winter cover, it looks beautiful but slightly desolate, in anycase it intrigued me :) Thanks for stopping by!

Awesome selection of books this week!

Thanks for sharing,
My IMM for this week –

Thanks for stopping by Dani!

Yayy Surrender! I find it really bizarre that the UK publisher isn’t doing book 3 with a UK cover when they did books 1 and 2 but ah well, I got the US edition so even thought they don’t match at all with my pretty UK covers, I get to find out what happens, finally!!

I didn’t remember the last 2 books having such yuck covers, I must have the UK editions. I can’t wait to find out either am hoping I can squeeze in reading it very soon!

Tanya Patrice says:

I love the cover for Ashen Winter and it sounds like something I might pick up. And I hadn’t heard of Edelweiss before – hope you hear back from them soon though.

There were heaps more titles available for request in Edelweiss plus lots of great marketing information from the publishers, I was really hoping it would be a good tool to request books from but unsure now!

These look really awesome! My IMM Post

Thanks for stopping by and commenting :)

Very nice selections! $150 is quite a lot to spend on ebooks so it’s a great idea to space it out on books you really want :)

I agree taking a bit of time makes it last so much longer :) Heaps more fun! And its not like I can read 10+ books at once in anycase!

Olivia @ The Reading Enchantress says:

Great mailbox! $150? Lucky you! I’m reading Clarity right now, and I just won Perception from a Goodreads contest. I’ve never heard of Surrender, I’ll have to check the other books in the series and I still need to read Ashfall :) Enjoy and Thanks for stopping by!

No worries :) I was very spoilt – $150 can stretch a long way with e-books!
