Parallel by Lauren MillerIn My Mailbox #2
In My Mailbox, hosted by The Story Siren is a weekly post that allows book bloggers to share their excitement over new books they have received each week.
My blog has now been live for 1 whole week and so far I’ve been pretty happy with how its all gone. I’ve got quite a bit of reading material organised for the upcoming months for review and am feeling things are pretty well in control which is great! While you’re here make sure you check out my Giveaway to win 2 YA books!
I have scored a few books this week so I’ll do a quick happy dance over my latest finds!
Purchased Books
I’m not quite sure what possessed me to purchase more books this week considering I have so many still waiting to be read. In anycase the Amazon 1 click feature won over rational thought and I picked up a couple more titles for my Kindle.

Above by Leah BobetGoodreads.com | Amazon | The Book Depository I’ve put this book down in both my debut author challenge and dystopian challenge so I’m really glad that there was a Kindle version available for purchase! I think the cover is awesome too! Goodreads Synopsis: Matthew’s father had lion’s feet and his mother had gills, and both fled the modern-day city to live in underground Safe, a secret community of freaks, ghost-whisperers, and disabled outcasts hidden beyond the subways and sewers. Raised underground, Matthew is responsible for the keeping of both Safe’s histories and the traumatized shapeshifter Ariel, the girl he took in, fell in love with — and can’t stop from constantly running away. But Safe is no longer safe: the night after a frightening encounter in the sewers, Safe’s founder Atticus is murdered by the one person Safe ever exiled: mad Corner, whose coup is backed by an army of mindless, whispering shadows. Only Matthew, Ariel, and a handful of unstable, crippled compatriots escape to the city that cast them out; the dangerous place he knows only as Above. Despite Ariel’s increasingly erratic behaviour and with the odds against them, Matthew must find a way to rescue Safe from Corner’s occupying army. But as his quest leads him through abandoned asylums and the dregs of urban poverty, Matthew discovers that the histories he’s devoted his life to aren’t true: Corner’s invasion — and Ariel’s terrors — are rooted in a history of Safe much darker and bloodier than Matthew ever imagined. And even if he manages to save both home and Ariel, he may well lose himself. |

The Scorpio Races by Maggie StiefvaterGoodreads.com | Amazon | The Book Depository I’ve heard good things about this book and for only $2.99 I thought it sounded like a great bargain! Goodreads Synopsis: It happens at the start of every November: the Scorpio Races. Riders attempt to keep hold of their water horses long enough to make it to the finish line. Some riders live. Others die. At age nineteen, Sean Kendrick is the returning champion. He is a young man of few words, and if he has any fears, he keeps them buried deep, where no one else can see them. Puck Connolly is different. She never meant to ride in the Scorpio Races. But fate hasn’t given her much of a chance. So she enters the competition — the first girl ever to do so. She is in no way prepared for what is going to happen. |
For Review
I’ve got heaps of books from Netgalley now waiting for review. I’m trying to be good and make sure that there aren’t too many being published at the same time so I can space out the reads and have the reviews ready within a week of the books launch. I did still get approved for 2 more books this week both which look fantastic!

Kissing Shakespeare by Pamela MinglePublished 14 August 2012 Goodreads.com | Amazon | The Book Depository I fell in the love with the cover and premise on Netgalley and was so excited that I got approved to read this ARC! Can’t wait till I get a chance to sit down with it. Goodreads Synopsis: Miranda has Shakespeare in her blood: she hopes one day to become a Shakespearean actor like her famous parents. At least, she does until her disastrous performance in her school’s staging of The Taming of the Shrew. Humiliated, Miranda skips the opening-night party. All she wants to do is hide. Fellow cast member, Stephen Langford, has other plans for Miranda. When he steps out of the backstage shadows and asks if she’d like to meet Shakespeare, Miranda thinks he’s a total nutcase. But before she can object, Stephen whisks her back to 16th century England—the world Stephen’s really from. He wants Miranda use her acting talents and modern-day charms on the young Will Shakespeare. Without her help, Stephen claims, the world will lost its greatest playwright. Miranda isn’t convinced she’s the girl for the job. Why would Shakespeare care about her? And just who is this infuriating time traveler, Stephen Langford? Reluctantly, she agrees to help, knowing that it’s her only chance of getting back to the present and her “real” life. What Miranda doesn’t bargain for is finding true love . . . with no acting required. |

Shadowfell by Juliet MarillierPublished 11 September 2012 Goodreads.com | Amazon | The Book Depository I’ve never read anything by Juliet Marillier before yet have had multiple people tell me she is a brilliant author. This book sounded a little bit more “fantasy” than what I normally read these days but thought I would give her a go and see for myself what the hype is about. Goodreads Synopsis: Sixteen-year-old Neryn is alone in the land of Alban, where the oppressive king has ordered anyone with magical strengths captured and brought before him. Eager to hide her own canny skill–a uniquely powerful ability to communicate with the fairy-like Good Folk–Neryn sets out for the legendary Shadowfell, a home and training ground for a secret rebel group determined to overthrow the evil King Keldec. During her dangerous journey, she receives aid from the Good Folk, who tell her she must pass a series of tests in order to recognize her full potential. She also finds help from a handsome young man, Flint, who rescues her from certain death–but whose motives in doing so remain unclear. Neryn struggles to trust her only allies. They both hint that she alone may be the key to Alban’s release from Keldec’s rule. Homeless, unsure of who to trust, and trapped in an empire determined to crush her, Neryn must make it to Shadowfell not only to save herself, but to save Alban. |
